Frequently asked questions?
Do I need to make an appointment for an eye exam in advance?
No appointment is required for an eye exam – just come in at any time during business hours. If you would like to reserve a specific appointment that suits you, this can also be arranged in advance.
Who is an optometrist?
An optometrist is a specialist in measuring vision, determining diopters, and identifying possible vision disorders. They do not make medical diagnoses like an ophthalmologist, but they can detect various irregularities and refer you for further diagnostics if necessary.
What does an eye exam look like and how long does it take?
Optometric vision examination lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes and takes place in several steps:
- Brief interview (history) - The examination begins with an interview. The optometrist asks you about your previous vision problems, whether you have ever worn prescription glasses or contact lenses, family history of vision problems, whether you experience headaches, eye strain, blurred vision, burning, dryness, etc.
- Vision test without correction (so-called visual acuity) - Do you experience headaches, eye strain, blurred vision, burning, dryness, etc.
- Objective diopter measurement (autorefractometry) - In this step, a special device (autorefractometer) is used that automatically measures your dioptre - it gives the first, orientational result.
- Subjective determination of diopters - Here, the optometrist uses classic tests with changing lenses in front of your eyes to find the optimal correction, with your feedback ("is the letter clearer this way or this way?").
- Binocular vision and accommodation testing - This tests how both eyes work together and the eye's ability to adapt to different distances - especially important for children, students, and people who spend a lot of time in front of screens.
- Measurement of eye pressure (if necessary) - If included in the service, eye pressure is measured, which is important for early detection of the risk of glaucoma (most often with painless air or a digital tonometer).
- Counseling and recommendations - After the examination, the optometrist explains the results to you, suggests the type of glasses or contact lenses, recommends protective filters (e.g. for blue light), and provides advice on vision care.
Is the eye exam completely free?
The vision examination is completely free, regardless of whether you just want to check your diopters, suspect a worsening of vision or are interested in the general condition of your vision.
Note: A written report or opinion from an optometrist is issued exclusively with the purchase of glasses or contact lenses.
